The Socialist Alternative

"I voted Labour last time but I won't be voting for them again."
"I don't know who to vote for, they're all as bad as each other."

This is what people are saying on the doorsteps, on the streets and in the workplaces in this election campaign. If people don't vote it won't be because they are 'apathetic'. There is burning anger about the state of our public services, about low pay and job cuts, about the billions that are being spent on a war in Iraq and how Tony Blair lied to justify it.

But there is no mainstream party putting forward an alternative to New Labour's big business agenda. That's why the Socialist Party is standing candidates in this election. This week we launched our election manifesto. Here are some of the things we are calling for:

  • An end to privatisation - keep the fat cat profiteers out of health, education and other public services.
  • Nationalise Rover - as the BBC explained last week the Socialist Party is the only party calling for Rover to be taken into public ownership to secure workers' jobs.
  • End low pay - for a minimum wage of £8 an hour with no exceptions.
  • Withdraw the troops from Iraq - £5 billion has been spent so far on war with Iraq. This money should be spent on public services.
  • Stop the pensions robbery - increase the basic state pension by 50% immediately. No to an increase in the retirement age. Support public-sector workers fighting to defend their pensions.
  • Abolish tuition fees - for a living grant for all students.
  • A massive redistribution of wealth - for an end to the rule of profit. For a socialist plan of production where society and the economy will be democratically run to meet the needs of all whilst protecting our environment.

For more details of our manifesto see our Election Campaign pages.

IF YOU agree with what we are saying then vote socialist in those areas where we are standing. But don't leave it there. The Socialist Party is not just standing for this election but to prepare for the battles to come.

Because of the lack of a national alternative New Labour are likely to win this election. But their manifesto is a declaration of war on our public services and the jobs of public-sector workers. As far as Blair and the other Labour leaders are concerned there are no limits to how far privatisation can go. Working-class people need to organise now to fight back against these attacks.

The Socialist Party is not just concerned with elections. We campaign day in day out in the workplaces, communities and colleges to defend working-class people against the attacks of big business and their political representatives.

An important part of that campaigning work is the fight to build a new party that can give a voice to workers and all those who want an alternative to the profit system.

Why not join us and help build that alternative.
