Workers in female-dominated roles have been blamed for the financial crisis at Birmingham City Council. But the reality is the Labour council could have avoided this situation if it had worked with the unions to win the funding from central government to pay its workforce properly, rather than pick fights at every opportunity!

Women workers in primary schools organised by the GMB union took a day’s strike action on 14 May, and lobbied the council cabinet meeting to make their demand for fair pay. And they definitely made it loud and clear!

This action can be a springboard to involve other council workers and unions alongside the community in a campaign for properly funded services with properly funded staffing.
